sunshine in winter

poetry & prose by dr. bethanne k.w.

About

Psychologist + Intuitive + Teacher + Writer + Mystic + Artist: this blog and myself  have been through so many reincarnations, I’ve lost count.

What started out in 2012 as a personal blog, and a way to process my experiences of finding myself again after a painful divorce (ie. finding “sunshine” in “winter”), eventually evolved into a smorgasbord of poetry, prose, and personal reflections centering around life wisdom, heart wisdom, and the natural world.

In 2016, my world was rocked by the sudden loss of my brother, and Sunshine In Winter once again came through as a space for me to write about grief. Several books eventually poured out of that season, including several poetry books containing collections of my work, as well as a grief book. Writing gave me a home at a time where I could find no other solace; books became word scrapbooks to help me remember my own becoming and share those very human experiences with others.

At present, life evolved once more, and my brother’s loss became the catalyst that moved me from Alaska to Kauai. For my official site, you can find me at bethannekw.com where I share my books, ecourses, work, and personal reflections. I’ve kept this space open out of fondness and nostalgia: these days I mostly share poetry (and a bit of occasional prose) on Sunshine In Winter inspired by life, spirit, change, and the beauty of Kauai.

With Peace,
BethAnne

  2. Hi from the antipodes. I found you on When Women Waken. I too share a fascination for the sky and its endless incarnations. I sometimes get out my binoculars to look at the moon’s craters when I am feeling stressed. It really helps me get into perspective. Love your writing!

  6. I love your words! I’m studying to become an MFT and worry about losing my light while bring with clients in their darkness. Any words of insight?

    1. Hi Margarita, thank you so much for your kind words! I think it is a challenge for anyone in a people helping field to retain their light when they hear so much darkness, but we are remarkably resilient creatures and I think being aware of yourself is the first step in mindful prevention of compassion fatigue. A few thoughts off the top of my head- self care rituals are very important when working with others, especially ones that are grounding and get you out of your head and into your body and heart. Learning to let go of what you hear is important and choosing to consciously release the stories you hear from others so you are not carrying them around inside of you. Never underestimate the restorative power of being in nature or a good meal and a good night sleep! Last something somebody very wise once told me is to know the darkness and shadows inside myself and learn to shine love on them, for it is only in knowing our own darkness that we are able to make intentional choices that keep us from being drawn into other’s darkness. Good luck with all your studying and in your journey! 🙂
